Syria’s Chemical Weapons To Be Dismantled In Kosovo?

According to the Pristina daily Express, if Albania does not accept the destruction of Syrian chemical weapons stockpiles, the request will be extended to Kosovo.

Syrias-Chemical-weapons-to-be-destroyed-in-Kosovo-300x197The Albanian government rejected on Friday a US request to host the destruction of Syria`s chemical weapons, saying it was ill-equipped to handle the disposal of thousands of tons of toxic waste. The US Government has promised Albania an ‘aid package’ if it agreed to host the destruction of Syria’s chemical arsenal. Now it should be expected that Kosovo will get an interesting offer from the US administration.

Sources of Express say that as a second option, in the case Albania refuses, will be Kosovo.

There have been discussions of this nature in NATO countries as well. There are two possibilities, that those chemical weapons be temporarily stored in military facilities under Mount Goleshi, or as a second option is their destruction in the furnaces of Trepca,” sources say.

According to the same sources, the Government of Kosovo has not completely ruled out this option, but the source has mentioned investments in environmental protection in return for the service that is being done to resolve the international deadlock.

The reason why Kosovo finds itself in this combination, sources next to the government in Prishtina say, are the good relation that the Government of Kosovo has with the United States.
